FOR ALL THE ELLIS'S, I have a story to tell you. You are all really Chapman's! William D. Chapman was born in 1851 in Paulding County Ohio (listed as his birth place in his obituary) to Timothy Chapman and Sarah A Barnard. Sarah died in 1852-53 from what has said to have been from being struck by lightening (per a story on a family tree on Ancestry.com) Timothy then remarried another woman named Sarah A Gamble. His second wife "Sarah" died in 1860 from falling in a well..of this I am sure, I found the newspaper article. Timothy then remarried again 5 months later to Catherine Johnson. Luckily for Catherine, she outlived Timothy!

Our William, son of Timothy, had a full blooded older sister (Mary Amanda Chapman b.1844) that was passed on to be raised by Timothy's brother (Miles Eben Chapman) and William went on to be raised by Southard Ellis (this all being after the death of their Mother "Sarah A Barnard") The proof of this is on the 1860 Indiana and Ohio Census's. I am guessing his later wives did not want his children from another woman.

I have not found the connection between Southard and Timothy..only that they were both farmers and lived within 10-15 miles of each other. When William was in his early 20's he changed his name to William D. ELLIS. Right after changing his name, he married a "Corintha Chapman" of Paulding county Ohio. Known fact: Corintha Chapman was the the younger half sister of Timothy Chapman,Williams Father. Corintha and Timothy are listed as siblings on many family tree's on Ancestry.com. William and Corintha were married under 3 years and had one child "Preston Ellis". We are not the descendants of Corintha as a "Grandmother" but as a half Aunt!! William went on to marry Mary Topper and that is our family line. Pretty interesting don't ya think? My proof is a copy of Timothy Chapman's will, William Chapman is listed as one of his children and living in Butler, IN. There was NO William Chapman in the census's of Butler, IN (since he had changed his name), only William Ellis. There was no birth certificates at the time William was born nore was there social security cards. In order for someone to change their name, they simply just started going by the different name. Further proof: The ONLY male Chapman of child bearing age in the 1850 Paulding County Ohio Census is "Timothy Chapman." I think I know now why none of us knew we were Chapman's !

Without the help of Sara Slaven none of this could of been proven! Sara's husband is a decendant of Corintha Chapman. So thankful to have come into contact with her through ancestry.com.
